Sophomore Timeline

GRADE 10

SPRING

1. Begin light discussion of future and college  
2. Visit/tour several colleges to become acquainted with the touring process  
3. If you receive individualized services through either a 504 or special education plan, please contact your guidance counselor for information regarding possible standardized testing services for students with disabilities

 

GRADE 11

AUTUMN

1. Register to take the PSAT (held annually in October at DSHS)

LATE AUTUMN/EARLY WINTER

1. Attend Parent/Guardian and Student Night

SPRING

1. Visit colleges and universities, in person if possible 
2. Check the DSHS Guidance website for SAT and ACT dates as well as registration deadlines

 

SUMMER BETWEEN GRADE 11 AND 12

1. Visit colleges and schedule interviews if suggested 
2. Practice before you interview at your first choice school 
3. Start filling out the Common Application including activities 
4. Begin drafting your college application essay(s)

 

GRADE 12

 AUTUMN

1. Visit colleges and schedule interviews - Students are allowed 3 college visit days with pre-approval form from the main office
2. Be mindful of college application deadlines!  
3. Make sure Naviance and the Common App are synched (will cover in Senior Seminars) and all colleges applying to are in Naviance
4. Be mindful of standardized testing deadlines for October, November and December SAT tests
5. Attend a local “Financial Aid Webinar” and check with each college to ascertain the required forms – CSS PROFILE or FAFSA or both  
6. If filing for financial aid, COMPLETE the FAFSA, available starting October 1st
    

SPRING

1. VISIT colleges again before making final decisions 
2. Send deposit to the ONE college which you will attend BEFORE MAY 1^ST.
