Vision and Hearing: The purpose of
the vision and hearing screening
is to identify children who may have vision or hearing impairments that
might prevent them from obtaining maximum benefit from their educational
experience. Screenings are done in accordance with the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health on all children in the seventh grade.
In addition, all children new to
the school district and students in other grades suspected of having any
vision or hearing difficulty will be screened. Teachers, as well as
parents may refer students for screening at any time during the year.
With both vision and hearing screenings, children who fail the initial
screening are rescreened a few weeks later before a referral is made.
Postural
Screening: The purpose of postural
screening is to detect early signs of spinal problems that should have
further medical evaluation. At the Dover-Sherborn Middle School,
screening is done annually in grades 6 through 8 because young people in
this age range are in a growth spurt, and they mature at different rates.
