Essential Question (s): If you were in a foreign country could you play music with other musicians who do not speak your language? If you were given a book of songs could you read the music and perform the songs for the class? Can you read music and interpret what is on the musical page? |

Learning Objectives: Students will understand all aspects of music including, notes, pitch, rhythm, melody, form, dynamics, tempo, and symbols. Students will be able to read the notes, pitches and rhythm and play songs on the barred instruments. Students will perform songs learned for the class. Students will be able to sight read simple melodies and rhythmic patterns in common time. Students will write simple melodies and rhythmic patterns and demonstrate them to the class. Students will understand symbols on the musical page and use them to play and practice songs. |

Skills: Students will read and write music in common time for the treble clef. Students will learn how to listen and model short rhythmic patterns. Students will create short rhythmic patterns for the class. Students will learn to play an instrument and demonstrate their knowledge of reading music. |

Instructional Strategies & Activities: Games, flashcards, playing instruments, singing and clapping melodies and rhythms. Sight singing strategies are explored through modeling, repetition, dictation, listening and solfege. * As the midi lab is established, software will offer other activities. |

Materials Utilized: handouts, flashcards, whiteboard, instruments, manuscript paper, easy song books. * Computer and software. |

Assessment Strategies: Written quizzes and test, oral demonstrations, and performance on instruments in the class. * As midi lab is established students will use self assessment available with computers. |
