Essential Question (s):

 

Is the whole ensemble (the “band experience”) greater than the sum of its parts?  Is it enough to know your part and be able to technically play it in band?

 

Learning Objectives:

 

Have instrument, music and pencil.  Keep music neat.  Respect and pay attention to Mr. Duprey.  Attend all performances.  Practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week.  Perform scales/rudiments, rhythmic/technical studies and band material to a competent level.

 

Skills:

 

1 octave chromatic sale.  Major scales (0 – 4 flats).   ¦¼,³¼ and ²¼ time signatures.  Rhythms containing    ¬, ., ,  ±. Ö, ±, Öµ and ». Play in tune and with balance and blend.

 

Instructional Strategies & Activities:

 

Establish a routine; both for band rehearsal and home practice…these should be parallel.  Drill scales and rhythms.  Play chorales for intonation and blend/balance.

 

Materials Utilized:

 

Text = “Accent on Achievement” book one.  Band Music = Grade 1 – 1.5

 

Assessment Strategies:

 

Concert performances (the culmination of Skills and Activities).  Compliance with rehearsal and performance criteria outlined in “Learning Objectives” above.
