Where do “shortcuts” come from? (i.e. Why does the Distributive Property work?)

    What is the “hierarchy” or “classification” of numbers and why is it necessary?

Learning Objectives:    

   Use order of operations.

   Simplify and evaluate expressions involving grouping symbols and absolute value.

   Solve equations given a domain.

   Translate word phrases and sentences into algebraic expressions and equations.  

   Translate word problems into algebraic equations.

   Interpret and use the number line, and the ideas of opposites and absolute value.

   Simplify expressions and evaluate algebraic expressions.

   Read and interpret word problems.
