Grade 9 PE/Wellness Syllabus Dover-Sherborn High School Freshman Wellness/Physical Education SyllabusCourse Description
Freshman students are enrolled in Physical Education for one semester. This class will meet 5 times in an eight-day rotation. The curriculum will concentrate mainly on leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving, and fitness. At the conclusion of the course students will hopefully have gained the following:
· Understanding of the importance of communication and leadership, especially as it pertains to problem solving and the ropes course · Understanding of the benefits of teamwork and sportsmanship through cooperation and competition · An appreciation for muscular and cardiovascular fitness as it relates to overall health, as well as stress and tension reduction · A positive and enjoyable experience
Basic Expectations
Be on time, be prepared, be respectful, and make the best of class. Students must always have appropriate clothing for all temperatures, and sneakers. Some days we will not need to change, but you always need to be prepared for whatever the day might bring. Jewelry should also be removed for PE class.
The ropes course is a main focus of your freshman curriculum, but it is not a guarantee. We have a large class this year, and I will need everyone’s help if we are going to be using the ropes course. If I cannot trust you to be mature and serious about something that can cause permanent injury then I will not allow you to participate in the ropes course completion.
Facilities Management
Take good care of equipment, ropes course, and locker room facilities. Be respectful to the instructor, substitute teacher, and other students in the class. Have a positive attitude, exemplify sportsmanship, be on time, and do not use inappropriate language. Any student who disobeys rules established in the Student Handbook throughout the semester will be subjected to disciplinary action.
Grading
Students will be graded in a variety of areas. The four main components of your term grade will be written assessments, skill assessments, Fitnessgram, and daily grade. Since the vast amount of our class requires participation there will be a daily grade for each class period. There are a possible 4 points for each class and the overall daily grade will be 30% of your term grades. Skill assessments will be worth 35%, which Fitnessgram testing will be a part of, and written assessments will be worth 35%.
v Since participation is so vital to our grading, if you miss a class, any assignments missed must be made up and you must complete a make up assignment to earn your 4 Daily Grade points for the day. One point for each of the following: preparedness, participation, behavior, respect.
v Also, you do have a final exam in this class.
Medical ExemptionStudents who are not allowed to participate in Physical Education class because of a medical issue will be given a written assignment to complete during the class period. Those students will also not be allowed to participate in a practice or contest of a team sport due to MIAA rules. As a coach and a teacher I take this one very seriously. Contact Information
