Freshman Wellness/Health Syllabus

Course Description

Freshman students are enrolled in Health for one semester.  This class will meet 5 times in an eight-day rotation.  The curriculum will concentrate mainly on introduction to wellness, communication, fundamentals of fitness, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and sports and society.  At the conclusion of the course students will hopefully have gained the following:

·        Understanding of the importance of communication and leadership

·        Understanding of the benefits eating right and exercise

·        An understanding of human anatomy

·        An understanding of the role of sports in American culture

·        A positive and enjoyable experience

Basic Expectations

Be on time, be prepared, be respectful, and make the best of class.  Students should have a folder/binder that will hold all of their health materials.  There will not be a lot of homework so it makes it that much more important that you actually complete each assignment.

You will be required to take notes on a fairly regular basis, but our curriculum will focus around discussions, reading articles, watching films, and doing research for presentations.  Health does not count towards your GPA, but it does affect other areas of your academic standing.

Facilities Management

Take good care of classroom.  All desks should end up in the same spot at the end of class that they were in at the beginning.  Be respectful to the instructor, substitute teacher, and other students in the class.  Have a positive attitude, be on time, and do not use inappropriate language.   Any student who disobeys rules established in the Student Handbook throughout the semester will be subjected to disciplinary action.

Grading

Students will be graded in a variety of areas.  There will be many little quizzes to kind of “check in” and make sure everyone understands the material we are covering.  You will some homework, projects, and tests.

v     Also, you do have a final exam in this class.

To Be Successful

  • A positive, open mind
  • Active class participation, in group and individual work
  • Homework must be completed and brought in to class on a daily basis.  Many times the work brought in from the night before is used in the next lesson.
  • Attendance; please see the attendance policy.  You should be here and if you are not, please find out what you have missed.
  • Preparation for class.  Please have all materials with you, including your notebook, and any assignments.
