Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Kashmir, Choguri, Karakorum. Names that conjure intrigue and romance, mystery and majesty. When British surveyor T.G. Montgomery surveyed Kashmir region in central Asia in 1856, he noticed a tall mountain in the distance. He named it K1 (K for the Karakorum range). Behind that mountain, yet another peak rose into the canopy of the earth. It he named K2, though the local name is Choguri. A summit that is 8611 meters or 28, 251 feet high and borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, it has daunted and tested climbers for over a century, and it is a mountain that has led to inspiring change. When climber Greg Mortenson failed in his attempt to master the mountain, he found himself in a village that gave him food, shelter, and warmth of spirit. Moved by the hospitality and generosity of the villagers, Mortenson was inspired to build a school for girls, and has since built sixty-four schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Inspired by his courage and indefatigable spirit, the English and Social Studies Departments are sponsoring an interdisciplinary project to raise global and cultural awareness, to foster strong community, and to build a school. As part of this project, all students in the high school will read Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson’s remarkable story. Faculty and staff at the high school will also be encouraged to read the book, and the libraries of Dover and Sherborn will facilitate a community read. We hope that this will be an exciting journey for all, and to assist you in your journey, click here for essential questions, useful vocabulary, maps, and study guides.
