Marine Science
Semester
(357) Honors
(358) College Prep
3 Credits
Open to Grades 11 and 12
Prerequisites: Both
Biology and Chemistry
A
one semester course that will provide a survey of the marine sciences,
including geology, chemistry, biology, and geography.
Students will study specific marine species through research and
dissections to achieve a better understanding of the interrelationships
between these species and their physical environment.
An understanding of this interrelationship will be applied to
current issues regarding human impact on the marine environment. Students
will be expected to complete a long term exploratory project related to
one of the units on a topic of scientific interest to them.
Upon
successful completion of the course students should be able to:
·
demonstrate a broad but cohesive knowledge of the interdisciplinary
study of the oceans
·
recognize major systematic groups of marine organisms and
understand how they are interconnected in the ecosystem
·
demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of organ
systems in some of the major systematic groups
·
use scientific tools to carry out experiments
·
demonstrate an understanding of human impact on the health of the
oceans
