Participation Scoring Rubric

To earn a 4 that day a student will demonstrate clear and consistent engagement in class.

·         Fully participates in class discussion-- answers an appropriate amount of questions without dominating class discussion.   Often articulates “fit” of readings with topic at hand with responses, point of view or questions.

·         Consistently acts appropriately during group work, role plays and other activities

·         Consistently demonstrates commitment through thorough preparation by showing a high level of focus

·         Listens attentively to others by expanding on or respectfully contesting a point made by a classmate or teacher.

 

To earn a 3 that day a student will demonstrate clear engagement.

·         Often participates in class discussion—speaks once or twice.   Occasionally articulates “fit” of readings with topic at hand with responses, point of view or questions.

·         Generally acts appropriately during group work, role plays, and other activities.

·         Generally prepared and shows focus throughout class.

·         Listens to others by offering points that are relevant to class discussion.

 

To earn a 2 that day a student will demonstrate limited engagement in class.

·         Participates in class discussion at least once.   Rarely articulates “fit” of readings with topic at hand with responses, point of view or questions.

·         Occasionally acts inappropriately during group work, role plays, and other activities.

·         Often unprepared or appear to be inattentive throughout class.

·         May need to listen more attentively;  provides redundant or vague responses

 

To earn a 1 that day a student will demonstrate little or no engagement in class.

·         Not participate in class discussion at all or consistently makes off topic remarks.

·         Often acts inappropriately during group work, role plays, and other activities.

·         Rarely prepared and shows a lack of focus, possibly by distracting others from the educational process

·         Shows inattentiveness by participating in side discussions while classmate or teacher is speaking
