FAQs RE: Mrs. Bachand’s Class Routines/Expectations Q: What do I need to purchase for this class? A: A three ring binder that is about 1.5” wide. A Texas Instrument Graphing Calculator (TI-84, TI-84 Plus, TI-83) will be used extensively in the classroom and for homework. Get approval before purchasing another brand. Extra Credit Opportunity: Bring in Proof of Purchase barcode for a bonus point. Q: How do I have to organize my binder? A: Your binder will contain chapter assignment sheets, homework, notes, paper, handouts, tests/quizzes, and grade reports. You may make sections for each category or organize your notebook chronologically by chapter. Q: What do I need to bring to class each day? A: Your math binder with the completed assignment, your calculator, and a writing utensil. You may leave your covered book at home. Books are available on the back shelf and can be signed out for use during DRs. Q: What is expected of me when I enter the classroom? Pick up materials (often prepared notes) at overhead, complete the bell work problem (appears at the top of your notes or on overhead screen), take out your homework, and put homework questions up on the board. Q: How is my grade calculated? A: Quarter grades will be determined by dividing total points earned by the total number of points possible and are based upon assessments, projects, possible binder checks, class participation (occasionally points usually during independent review days; also grade bumps), class check-ins, and homework. Q: How are binder checks conducted? A: Binder checks can occur at most once each term. They are often not announced and your binder is checked in class for organization and sometimes certain items (i.e. a specific HW, test, or class notes) are located to determine a binder grade. You may clean out your binder after the midyear exam and store material from first semester at home or in your locker. Q: Will I be given advance notice of tests and quizzes? A: Of course! Chapter assignment sheets are distributed at the beginning of each chapter and provide ample notice of scheduled assessments. Q: Can I get extra time on tests/quizzes? A: Students who receive an extra time accommodation must arrange for their extra time (usually 30 minutes) to be taken on the same day as the assessment. Q: Will I know my academic standing? A: Grade reports are given after every major assessment, about once a cycle. If you think your grade report has an error, be sure to bring it to Mrs. Bachand’s attention within two days of receiving a grade report. If there is a blank (i.e. no point value) on your report, it is your responsibility to see Mrs. B that day to take care of it otherwise it will become a zero. Q: What do I do if I miss class? A: Try to complete the next assignment if you can. Be sure to check the folder and pick up any handouts when you return to school. Submit or show Mrs. B your homework that may have been checked when you missed class. Make a photocopy of a classmate’s completed notes. If you know in advance that you will miss class, check in with Ms. B. Q: What do I do if I miss a test/quiz? A: See Mrs. Bachand or send her an email ASAP to let her know when (any DR, after or before school) you will take the make-up. If you know you will be absent on the day of an assessment, arrange a make-up time in advance! Q: What do I do with tests/quizzes that are returned to me? A: You are expected to learn from errors made on assessments. Assessment corrections will be assigned and are usually due a couple of classes after assessment is returned. Either write your corrections on a separate piece of paper and attach to assessment or directly on the assessment but in a different color. Corrections may be collected and checked for either an assignment check or points back on your assessment. Q: When is extra help offered? A: Extra help is generally available after school in room 206 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Extra help is also available before school starting at 7:05. A calendar on the side board of the classroom displays availability. Morning sessions on the day of an assessment are student directed. When you attend, be sure to sign in by putting the date on your index card. Q: How is homework checked? A: Generally homework is checked for effort, however see the separate handout regarding homework expectations. Q: What if I accidentally forget to bring my homework to class, can I get credit for it the next day? A: Late homework assignments are not accepted unless there are extenuating circumstances since it is reviewed in class however every student gets one late HW pass to use once during the year. Please see homework policy. Q: Is there a chance to earn extra credit? A: There are few opportunities for extra credit including challenge problems from folder (first two accepted per class), and bringing in math related comics (not already in my collection which usually means new ones). Limit three extra credit points per term. Also, bonus questions also appear on some assessments. Q: Do you round? A: Yes, but not automatically. Class participation and/or extra help effort are also considered when rounding a student with an 89.4% could get an A−. Q: What happens if I accidentally forget my calculator? Q: Any advice for a successful year? A: Do your homework consistently for understanding, not just to get credit for the homework check.
