Topics for Quiz 1.1-1.3

You are ready for Quiz 1.1-1.3 if you can do the following types of problems:

q     Solve linear equations and equations that may not initially appear to be linear but turn into linear equations.

(Section 1.1, Practice Problems: # 17, 23, 23, 29, 37, 59, 67, 73)

q     Use your graphing calculator to approximate the solution (2nd Trace, #5 Intersection) (1.1)  #63 HW went over in class, refer to calc packet

q     Rewrite formulas in terms of a specified variable.

(Section 1.1, Practice Problems:  #85 and 87)

q     Set up and solve linear word problems.  This will include but is not limited to interest, mixture, working together, constant rate and uniform motion problems.  (Section 1.2, Practice Problems:  # 15, 29, 35, 37, 40--answer is 15 hours, 42--answer to part a is 19 by 19 feet), 45, 47)

q     Solve a quadratic equation by factoring, square root method, completing the square, and quadratic formula.

(Section 1.3, Practice Problems: #7, 23, 29, 37, 41, 45)

q     Determine the number of real solutions of a quadratic using the discriminant.  (Section 1.3, Practice Problems # 79, 81, 83)

q     Set up and solve quadratic word problems.

(Section 1.3, Practice Problems # 85, 87, 89, 95)

Additional suggestion for preparing for the quiz is to rework class examples, homework problems, and/or examples in the textbook.  Reworking a past problem means covering up the solution and making sure you can obtain the correct answer.
