Digital Photograph: A One Semester Course

Description: This course is a one semester introduction to digital photography.  Students enrolled will complete eight exploratory projects.  Each project will teach a different technique, and each will require students to use a digital camera as an artistic tool.  In each exploration, emphasis will be placed on the refining, editing and displaying of a small number of pictures.  Students will be expected to create an online portfolio as well as a tangible portfolio of high resolution prints.

Schedule:   Each of the eight projects will be done over at least one eight day cycle.  

Grading: Each project will be given a letter grade.  The quarter grade will be an average of all the project grades.

Syllabus:  The eight projects are as follows:

Quarter One:

Project 1:  Use of a digital camera - taking, processing and printing images.

Project 2:  Exploration of a single subject - varying backgrounds.and frames

Project 3:  Camera perspective  - using unconventional vantage points.

Project 4:  Exploring the Macro world - constructing a puzzle out of magnified images.

Quarter Two:

Project 5:  Capturing motion - using f-stop, exposure time, and depth-of-field.

Project 6:  Photoshop manipulation - using advanced effects on a digital image.
                    Size superposition - combining two photos with difference scales

Project 7:  Animations: constructing GIFs using Adobe ImageReady

Project 8:  A final portfolio: presentation including a mosaic poster.
